Ask the experts

Natural Health, Nov, 2009 by Matthew Solan

Q can a dog or cat get diabetes?

YES. The causes of diabetes in dogs and cats often mirror those in humans: obesity, pancreatic dysfunction, hypothyroidism, and a diet high in simple carbs and sugar.

Look for red flags Just as with humans, diabetes occurs in animals when the pancreas can’t produce or use insulin properly. Certain behavior can be warning signs: “sugar highs” where your pet is highly active after meals followed by episodes of being lethargic; weakness; anemia; excess water consumption; and heavy urination. Another red flag is eyesight problems, such as cataracts, which may begin as squinting, repeated blinking, or cloudy eyes.

Weighing the fat While obesity may or may not contribute to diabetes in pets (it depends on the individual animal), an overweight pet is more susceptible to health problems in general. You should be able to feel its ribs through a thin layer of fat. When viewed from above, your pet should have a slight indentation at the waist.

Shop for good food Many commercial pet foods are loaded with sugar or poor quality and heavily processed straches and grain that gets converted to sugar during digestion. These high levels of sugar can exhaust your pet’s pancreas and lead to fish tank aquariums diabetes and other health problems. Choose meat-based food made with “whole meats,” such as turkey, beef, or chicken. Read the label and choose one that contains little or no grain. Avoid products that contain sugar.

Prevent and manage If your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, he or she may require daily insulin shots, often one or more, in various amounts depending on the animal. But it may be possible to manage your pet’s diabetes to a level where they need fewer daily injections or reduced insulin and, in some cases, even cure it. You can do this by introducing a healthier diet free of sugar and simple carbohydrates and promoting a healthy amount of daily exercise to keep their weight in check.

Get your pet active Ideally, unless health issues prevent it, your dog should be walked at least twice a day (letting him or her out in the backyard doesn’t count as you can’t guarantee they’ll stay active.) For cats, share quality playtime and encourage exercise with a favorite toy.

Q Can daylight saving time affect my heatlth?

YES. Any time you shift to a new time schedule, your internal clock gets disrupted. This can affect your sleep pattern and result in irritability, digestion problems, headaches, fatigue, and even a change in blood pressure.

Get your slumber One way to gauge your proper sleep time is on your next vacation: Sleep in as long as you can and notice how much sleep you need to wake up fresh and energetic. In three days, you should be able to accurately measure what’s your ideal length of sleep.

Reset your clock It takes about one day for every hour of change to reset your inner clock. In the spring, plan ahead for the precious hour you’ll lose. On Thursday, go to bed 30 minutes early and then one hour early on Friday. In fall, take advantage of the extra hour and sleep in, but stick to your usual bedtime routine. (Some people celebrate by staying up later than normal and lose out on the precious extra sleep.)

–Lawrence J. Epstein, M.D., author of The Harvard Medical School Guide to a Good Night’s Sleep (McGraw-Hill, 2006) and medical director of Sleep HealthCenters in Boston

Q Are pumpkin seeds a healthy snack?

YES. Raw pumpkin seeds, those castoffs from your Jack-O-Lantern, are one of the most nutritious and flavorful seeds. They contain calcium, which can help protect bones, omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, which can balance cholesterol levels and lessen inflammation, and vitamin K, great for promoting normal blood clotting (which helps when you cut yourself)

Energizing enzymes: a fitter, rejuvenated you may be just one enzyme supplement away. Our buyer’s guide shows you what you need now

Natural Health, Nov, 2009 by Meagan Francis

YOU’VE SHRUNK!” Elizabeth Yarnell’s mother exclaimed when her daughter returned from a month-long trip overseas transformed from a size 8 to a size 2.

Yarnell was almost as surprised as her mom. She hadn’t made the slightest change to her diet or exercise habits. The only thing she had done differently was start taking a digestive enzyme supplement–one capsule with each meal, two if the meal contained dairy.

“But the weight loss was only a bonus,” says the 40-year-old author of whole-foods cookbooks like Glorious One-Pot Meals (Broadway, 2009). “The enzyme supplement stopped the cramps, bloating, and gas I used to get after meals and I feel more energetic and happier. I’ve even managed to avoid the illnesses brought home by my two preschoolers and schoolteacher husband.”

Yarnell, who has multiple sclerosis, says that digestive enzymes are an important part of the healthy diet that helps her manage her disease. “My mother started taking enzymes after she saw what was happening to me, and other people in my life are giving it a try, too,” she says.

ENZYMES ARE COMPLEX PROTEIN

molecules found in every cell of our bodies that facilitate specific tasks like producing energy, rebuilding cells, breaking down fats and nutrients, or exchanging oxygen for carbon dioxide. Digestive enzymes–produced by the body and also found in raw fruits and veggies like pineapples, papaya, and sprouts–are responsible for helping to break down food, says Eric Braverman, M.D., founder of PATH Medical in New York City and author of Younger You quickest ways to lose weight (McGraw-Hill, 2006). From the moment you smell a delicious meal, your body jumps into action, secreting enzymes (amylase, which breaks down carbohydrates and starch) into your saliva. As food moves through your body, different enzymes (protease, which helps digest proteins, lipase, which breaks down fat, and amylase) continue the work of digesting and preparing the food to become nutrition for your body. Maltase and sucrase, which break down food sugars; cellulase, which breaks down cellulose, and lactase, which helps digest dairy products, also lend a hand.

By breaking down the food we eat into small enough bits, the enzymes allow nutrients to pass through the intestines and into the blood, where other enzymes take the nutrients and use them to build muscles, bones, and blood as well as take care of other essential body functions, like respiration.

But certain conditions, like lactose intolerance, have been linked to a deficiency in specific enzymes. And experts believe that our modern diet–heavy on cooked and processed foods and stimulants like caffeine and sugar–make it difficult for our digestive enzymes to do the job they’re made for.

Walk into a health food store and you’ll see an array of enzyme supplements claiming to cure conditions from acid reflux to acne. We’ve rounded up three must-have supplements that can help keep you fit and energized.

Get a flat belly

WHAT TO BUY Houston Enzymes HN-Zyme Prime ($16; houstonenzymes.com). These capsules contain nine different enzymes that break down complex carbs, triglyceride fats, starches, and proteins, blended together in a high concentration formula. The product is especially good at easing the gas and bloating that can come from slow digestion of fatty food and dairy products.

WHY IT WORKS Irregular digestion can cause bloating, gas and uncomfortable (and unsightly) fullness. Digestive enzyme supplements help by jump-starting the digestive process, helping your body more efficiently break down nutrients. Enzyme biochemist Devin Houston, Ph.D., recommends starting with one capsule with a meal, but says you may want to experiment with dosage. “With a big meal, like Thanksgiving dinner, you may want to take a couple of capsules before the meal and a couple after.”

CAVEAT Since diets, metabolisms and other factors can make your digestion slower or faster than other people’s, it’s a good idea to experiment until you find the right dosage for you. Enzymes are considered safe in any dosage–your body will get rid of whatever it doesn’t use–and they aren’t thought to interfere with other medications or supplements. Eating a high-protein or high-carb diet? You may want to take a supplement that specifically targets protein or carbohydrate digestion.

Eat what you love

WHAT TO BUY Shaklee EZ-Gest ($22.50; shaklee.com), a full-spectrum digestive enzymes formula that contains lactase, alpha galactosidase, protease, amylase, and lipase. Each enzyme helps break down a specific type of food.

WHY IT WORKS Sometimes there’s a simple evolutionary reason for the discomfort you feel after you eat that piece of pizza or ice cream cone

Diet may help mild diabetes

Topeka Capital-Journal, The, Aug 25, 2009

Dear Dr. Gott: A week ago, my doctor reported my fasting sugar level was 120. He recommended I not eat sweets of any kind. He offered to refer me to a nutritionist who could help me and also gave me the option to do it myself. I decided on the latter.

I have purchased two books pertaining to diabetes. Would your no- flour, no-sugar diet be one to follow?

Dear Reader: In a word, yes. My diet was designed to help people lose weight in a simple, inexpensive, safe and effective manner. Readers responded by the thousands to indicate they lost weight, their diabetes was brought under control, blood-pressure readings dropped and cholesterol levels were substantially reduced. Talk about a win-win situation.

Your physician was alert and caught your condition early. In fact, you were only five points over the normal high range of 115. This count should, under most circumstances, be lowered through diet alone.

Diabetes is broken down into two basic categories — type I and type II. Type I signifies that a person is insulin-dependent. Most type I buy phentermine no prescription diabetics develop the disease before the age of 30. Ninety percent of diabetics have type II diabetes. At one time, it was thought not to require insulin, but that is no longer the case. However, it usually is noninsulin-dependent, meaning it can likely be controlled with oral medication and regular exercise. The condition can be present in children and adolescents, but ordinarily begins after the age of 30. Nearly 90 percent of all type II diabetics are obese. This is a startling fact. A multitude of medical problems can occur with either type I or II that can be life- threatening. Heart disease, stroke, poor circulation, kidney failure, impotence and infection are just a few of the more complicated issues facing a diabetic .

It is a great deal easier to exercise, eat properly, and reduce foods that contain sugar than to suffer the consequences of long- term diabetes
