Drink-drivers warned of massive hike in insurance premiums

0 Comments | Coventry Evening Telegraph (England), Nov 20, 2009

DRINK-DRIVE offenders now face having to pay almost double the usual cost to insure their cars, according to a comparison site.

And some insurance firms are refusing to offer cover to the worst offenders, claims moneysupermarket.com In a stark warning in the run-up to the Christmas party season, spokesman Steve Sweeney says: “We are all guilty of letting our hair down to get into the festive spirit, but if you are planning on drinking it is essential to have travel arrangements to get you home.

“On top of a massive hike in insurance costs, any convicted motorist is likely to find it difficult to obtain insurance. What’s more, a conviction could lead to a pounds 1,000 fine, a 12-month driving ban and even a possible 12-month prison sentence. It’s simply not worth taking the risk.”

WebVisible Q3 Report Reveals New Trends in Local Interactive Marketing

Business Wire, Nov 23, 2009

  • CPC Rates Rising as Spend Shifts among other Search Engines
  • Google Remains Dominant, But Others Growing Share in Local

IRVINE, Calif. — WebVisible, Inc., a worldwide leader in local online advertising, today
released its 2009 Q3 Report on the State of Small Business Online
Advertising. This report, gleaned from data gathered over 90 days from a
sample of WebVisibles small and medium sized business clients, examines
local interactive advertising trends through Q3 2009, using Q3 2008 as a
baseline. WebVisible has worked with more than 100,000 clients across
more than 3,000 vertical categories around the world. Copies of the
report are available at: http://webvisible.com/learning-center/free-resources.php

Among the reports highlights is its finding that Yahoo and Bing/MSN
have both gained market share among the major search engines, perhaps as
much as five percent (5%). The report also notes that the tide continues
to rise for all the search engines in Local including Google.
Microsofts newly-launched Bing seems to be doing especially well since
its summer launch.

Microsoft spent a lot of money over the summer to launch Bing, and they
targeted their campaign directly at local business owners, said Matt
Booth, SVP and Program Director, Interactive Local Media for BIA/Kelsey.
I should think that they would be encouraged by these results, as more
and more SMBs move their ad budgets away from print and directories and
online, small market share increases will come to represent big dollars.

The WebVisible Report cites Bing/MSNs higher click-through rates (CTR)
in certain verticals as a potential explanation for this market dynamic.
Projected strategically, this could bode well for Microsoft in the race
to grab as much market share in the fast-growing, hyper-local market.

The big picture is great news for SMBs and good news for the Engines,
said Kirsten Mangers, WebVisible CEO. Local revenue is up across the
board, and the number of first-time buyers to increase
quarter-on-quarter. Anyone would feel good about the increased
competition in these markets. But, the real news is that these SMB
advertisers are getting results from their interactive budgets that
theyve been after for years now. Local interactive is on the rise
because it works.

Vehicle Production Group Announces MV-1 Production Will Start October 2010 With Ford Engine

PR Newswire, Nov 17, 2009

MIAMI, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ — The Vehicle Production Group LLC (VPG) announced today that volume production of the MV-1, the first factory-built and assembled wheelchair-accessible vehicle designed to meet the unique needs of the paratransit, taxi and consumer market, will commence in October 2010. The new vehicle will be powered by the rear wheel drive Ford 4.6L 2V EFI V8 engine and 4 speed automatic transmission and will be available in either gasoline or dedicated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) models.

The MV-1 is the first and only vehicle built from the ground up in the United States to meet or exceed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) vehicle guidelines. Unlike other wheelchair-accessible vehicles, it is not a conversion or aftermarket retrofit. Safe, durable, and less expensive than other accessible vehicle choices, the MV-1 was specifically designed to meet the demands of paratransit and taxicab fleets as well as individual consumers.

The MV-1 production will commence at the AM General plant in Mishawaka, Indiana with volume production beginning in October. AM General, which designs and produces the military HUMVEE and assembles the HUMMER H2, has a world-renowned reputation for building rugged vehicles, based on eight decades of successful innovation and growth. Durability and safety are critical to MV-1 customers and AM General is best positioned to help deliver on those needs.

The MV-1 is the only vehicle in its class with an OEM-engineered and factory assembled dedicated CNG fuel system option to ensure the same durability, reliability and quality that fleets demand from gasoline powered vehicles. The clean-burning CNG vehicle features a range of 250 miles and best-in-class cargo compartment volume. As a result of a strategic partnership between VPG and Clean Energy Fuel Corp., Clean Energy intends to expand its CNG fueling infrastructure in key US markets to support fleets operating the CNG powered MV-1.

The new MV-1 features 56-inch high and 36-inch wide rear doors for easy wheelchair entrance via a wide ramp that carries a 1200-pound capacity yet easily stores beneath the floor inside the vehicle. The MV-1 can accommodate five passengers plus the driver, including up to two forward facing wheelchair riders. With an interior floor to ceiling height of nearly 5 feet, the MV-1 can easily accommodate even the largest electric wheelchairs and provides easy entry and exit for all passengers with or without mobility challenges.

VPG is taking preproduction reservations at this time. Visit http://www.vpgautos.com/ or contact VPG at sales@vpgautos.com, 786-230-2100 to reserve an MV-1 today.

RECYCLING can be more exciting than putting out paper, glass and cans for the bin men each week.

Rethink your rubbish and create new ideas from your bin to decorate your home or to give as gifts to family and friends. Actress Amanda Holden and interior designer Oliver Heath (left) are backing a campaign to encourage us to reduce our waste. Residents of three “Waste Lanes” are aiming to reduce their packaging waste over four weeks and to inspire others to join The Kenco Eco Refill Waste Less Challenge. Go to www.kenco.co.uk for more info. Here are some ideas to start you off…

VINTAGE BOOK FRAMES

REMOVE the pages (recycle them) leaving just the cover. Reinforce the spine with a strip of card. Cut out a rectangle on the front cover to fit your photo. Next, using thin plastic sheets, cut a piece to fit over the front of the opening. Place your photos in position using photo corners. Fit the original cut-out piece into the back and secure with tape.

CAKE STAND

THIS clever idea could become an instant heirloom. Using glue that fixes glass, coat the base of a clean sherry glass and place it in the centre of a plate. Weight it down until dry. Then glue the rim of the glass and place the next plate on top. When dry, repeat the process, finishing with a plate on top

Graphic muscle

Muscle & Fitness, Jan, 2010

If you don’t train your legs for their own sake, then train them for your heart’s. This graph shows the range in leg size in both men and women that Danish scientists found to be associated with a significantly lower risk of heart disease. They followed nearly 3,000 men and women for more than 10 years and discovered that those whose thighs were less than 22 inches in circumference (measured at the top of the thigh) had a significantly greater risk (about double) of developing cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases within that decade and total mortality over 12 years. Those whose thighs measured more than 24 inches had significantly less risk than those whose thighs were less than 22 inches and about the same as those whose thighs measured just more than 22 inches.

TIP-OFF: The researchers found that the association of larger thigh size, and a reduced risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases and total mortality was independent of bodyfat and abdominal obesity

BROWN INJURY WORRY

0 Comments | Daily Mirror, The; London (UK), Nov 21, 2009 | by RONNIE ESPLIN

Dundee U v Celtic, tomorrow, 12.30 CELTIC boss Tony Mowbray has revealed Scott Brown will stay on the sidelines until specialists agree the diagnosis on his ankle complaint.

The Scotland midfielder has struggled for fitness since undergoing ankle surgery in the summer and a trip to see a specialist in London in October failed to solve the problem.

Brown has been left out completely since the Europa League game against Hamburg in Germany a month ago and will stay out while a fresh search for a cure continues.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Dundee United at Tannadice, Mowbray said: “Scott is not ready for this weekend.

“We are canvassing a few opinions from specialists at the moment so let’s wait and see over the next few weeks.

“We are giving him the chance to make sure we get the right diagnosis

Delayed benefit unfair

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 21, 2009

Do people realize what the government is trying to do with health care? Most lawmakers won’t read the 2,000-plus-page bill before they vote on it. What is most outrageous to me is the four years of taxes and six years of service. If people were told they had to pay for their cars or houses for four years before getting benefit from them, there would be revolt in the streets. If we all could start a business and charge people for four years before we had to provide service, we would all be a success.

What is it going to take before we realize what the government is doing to this great country?

Push on through: take a break from your mudane chest routine with this original—and highly effective—pec-punishing workout

Push on through: take a break from your mudane chest routine with this originaland highly effectivepec-punishing workout

Muscle & Fitness, Jan, 2010 by Joe Wuebben

WELCOME TO YOUR REGULAR CHEST WORKOUT–the gym-goer’s version of the movie Groundhog Day. It probably looks a lot like this: flat-bench presses followed by incline presses, declines and dumbbell or cable flyes. Another chest workout in the books until later that week, or maybe the following week, when you’ll do more or less the same thing. (All that’s missing are Bill Murray and Punxsutawney Phil.) And who can blame you? It’s a solid routine that has produced respectable results for many guys. * But Gunnar Peterson, CSCS, can–and will–blame you. After all, a workout that produces results today is a workout that produces a training plateau just a few months from now* “The common mistake people make when training chest is they get into a rut,” says Peterson, who trains a slew of professional athletes. “They fall into workout ruts that, not coincidentally, they end up sleepwalking through. I see this with the guys who do four sets each of flat bench, incline and decline presses, and cable flyes. There’s no question that program can work, but like any other routine, your body will adapt to it at some point and you’ll stop seeing results. There are so many ways to deviate within your training that’ll help you avoid a plateau.”

What Peterson is getting at here is the principle of muscle confusion: never letting your muscles get used to a particular stimulus, whether by changing up your exercises or altering your rep ranges and resistance.

“The pecs are kind of the upper-body equivalent of the glutes in terms of how the muscles come into play,” he explains. “It’s complex, with the fibers coming from different angles: low to high, high to low, inside out and vice versa. There are so many ways to beat up the pecs that you’d be remiss to just train flat, incline and decline.”

Peterson’s scheme includes unique variations of basic pressing and flye movements that not only blast the pecs but also engage the core, and enhance functional strength and balance. He keeps the rep ranges wide open, too, not to be elusive and vague but rather to encourage you to vary your weights from light to heavy to everything in between–all for the sake of confusing the pectoral region.

“I think you have to undulate your weights and reps in the macrocycle of your training, but I also think it’s okay to fluctuate within a workout,” he remarks. “That can be with different exercises [high reps for one move and low reps for the next] or within the same exercise. You could do a set of 15 reps, then a set of 12, then two sets of four, and then do a burnout set of 20.”

For the above series of chest moves, Peterson recommends doing anywhere from six to 20 reps per set. Looking for a hard and fast rule? “Go with 8-12 reps on flyes and 6-10 on presses,” he advises. “But I’m not really into hard and fast rules. If you want to get out of Triple-A and go up to The Show, you have to figure out how your body responds to high, low and moderate reps, and go from there. It’s like raising kids: You can teach them self-confidence or you can teach them self-reliance. I like to teach self-reliance.”

THE WORK OUT

* Choose 3-4 of the following exercises and perform 3-5 sets of 6-20 reps each.

* Select your exercises and the order in which you’ll do them based on whether you want a flye-dominant or press-dominant chest workout. For a flye-dominant routine, start with one or both of the flye/press combination moves below; for a press-dominant workout, do 2-3 of the pressing moves below before moving on to flyes.

* If you prefer not to overhaul your entire chest regimen, Peterson suggests adding any two of the exercises below to your current chest workout to spice things up.

PRESSES:

Incline Barbell Press (half rep/full rep)

Medicine-Ball Crossing-Over Push-Up

Plyometric Box Push-Up (narrow/wide)

Push-Up With Weighted T-Raise

FLYE/PRESS COMBINATIONS:

Bandit’s Loop Flye to Press (1)

Cable Flye to Dynamite Press (1)

(1) Do all reps for your flyes, then rep to failure on your presses.

For a quick demo of some of these moves, check out muscleandfitness.com

INCLINE BARBELL PRESS (half rep/full rep)

OLD STANDBY

Traditional Incline Barbell Press

GUNNAR’S TAKE: “Doing both half and full reps is a great way to amp up the intensity. It feels like you’re going heavy even though the poundage on the bar says you’re not.”

START: Lie faceup on an incline bench with a rack and grasp a barbell just outside shoulder width. Unrack the bar, and begin with it over your face, arms extended.

EXECUTION: Slowly lower the bar straight down until it touches your upper chest, then press the weight halfway up to the point where your elbows are just past 90 degrees

Consolidate districts

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Aug 7, 2009

I have read about the school board meetings and have even attended one for the Canyons School District. Here are my suggestions for all school boards to consider: outsourcing, sharing and consolidating.

All school districts in the valley should share one data processing department. They should form purchasing cooperatives. They should have a central food service co-op (?la airlines). They should look at centralizing or outsourcing janitorial, carpentry, carpet laying, security and maybe even car pools.

None of these options affect classroom size or teacher salaries.

Think outside the box.
